#Conversations:

Yesterday, I requested our son Abhi the Nomad to guide me in setting up my tools for my new YouTube channel recordings (I've started a YouTube channel. Currently, in Tamil. Soon, I'll add English language content too). Two highlights from our conversation:

Highlight #1:

"Appa, remember, I used the tea-filter + a cut-piece from my underwear to create my first pop filter?"

"I do. With that, you and Keerthi won the 1,000 dollars nationwide open-for-all 'Song for Better Fiji' music competition!"

(Backstory: We were in Fiji. Kids in school. Abhi's budding period as a musician. We got him a USB mic. Immediately, Abhi wanted a pop filter, the round thingy that stops air hitting the mic when you speak. "It's very cheap," he said.

Vaidehi and I told him that affordability should not be the criterion, and advised him to work with what he has.

Coincidently at that time, Fiji Islands announced a nationwide music competition with 1,000 Fijian dollars (approx US$ 500 / Rs 35,000) as the first prize. The participants should write the song, compose the music, sing, record, and send the mp3 file as a finished product. The competition was open to all ages, including professionals.

Abhi and Keerthi (Keerthi) wrote a song and sang it. Abhi used a tea filter + a piece of underwear cloth solution as a pop filter.

Abhi and Keerthi won the first prize of 1000 Fijian Dollars in the competition.)

Highlight #2:

"Appa, you can just outsource the editing part. It takes a lot of time, and it will not cost you much."

"No, Abhinna. You are making good money out of your music. You can do that. Let me do the editing, at least in the initial stages. I like that work. Moreover, affordability should not be the criterion."

"Of course!"

Both of us laugh.
